I went into this thinking it was a young adult title and boy was I wrong! Not that there was anything wrong with that, because I was pleasantly surprised. I think I’m just so used to reading YA, that as I was going through this novella, I was like “WTH! Is she allowed to write that?!”.
Anyways, I really enjoyed the book. At first, it reminded me of A Wicked Lovely, since this is a book about fairies and Meyers used the same rules and a similar premise for the characters. But, I realize that’s just the frame an author has to use when writing about fairies, and Meyers did a great job of creating a different tale revolving around them where the “seer” fights to save her friend from a terrible fate with the fey.
The romance between Rook and Cate seemed a bit forced at times, and I didn’t really believe how quickly they fell for each other, but then I had to realize that they have been around each other for a few years. The lust. Now that I could easily believe. The hot and steamy scenes between them were well-written and highly entertaining, and I loved how Meyers presented it in a very tasteful way.
The novella has a slow start, but you’ll find yourself eager for more by the end of it. I really liked it and it was a bit refreshing after all the YA I’ve been reading lately. I can’t wait for the actual series to come out. If you enjoy stories about fairies and want something more adult, then this it the book for you.
